Chapter 8 · Rally outside the app / 8.8
Rally in a web browser
Use the lightweight browser version to join conversations someone shared with you.
Rally has a lightweight version that runs in an ordinary web browser, at app.rallywith.ai. It is made for one job: working together in conversations someone has shared with you. A client you invited into a single Channel, a contractor helping with one Breakout, or a teammate on a computer without the Mac app can all open the browser version and join in, with nothing to install.
It is the light option on purpose. You cannot create an Organization, set up connections or make Sidekicks there, and there is no guided setup. All of that stays on the Mac. The conversations, though, are the same ones everyone else sees.
Sharing with people outside your Organization covers the other side of this: how you invite someone, and how you take that access back.
Accepting an invitation
When someone shares a conversation with you, you get an email with a link.
- Click the link. The browser version opens with your email address already filled in, and asks you to sign in with the address that received the invitation.
- Sign in (see the next section).
- Click Accept invitation. It shows Joining… for a moment.
- You see You're ready to collaborate, with a link for each thing shared with you, such as Open channel, Open main conversation or Open shared breakout. If only one thing was shared, it opens straight away.
Nothing happens until you click. Opening the link, or switching tabs, does not sign you in or accept anything on your behalf, so you always know who you are joining as.
- If the invitation has been withdrawn or has expired, the page says the invitation is unavailable. Ask the person who sent it for a new one.
- After you open the link, Rally removes the secret part from the address bar. If you reload the page after that, open the link from the email again.
- If you finish signing in from the email in another tab, go back to the invitation tab. It notices that you are signed in and carries on.
Note
An invitation to a shared conversation is different from an invitation to join an Organization. The Organization invitation, at rallywith.ai/invite, opens the Mac app instead (see Create or join an Organization).
Signing in by email
The browser version signs you in with your email address, no password needed. (The Mac and iPhone apps use Google instead.)
- Type your email address and click Email me a sign-in link.
- The page changes to Check your email. Rally sends you an email titled Sign in to Rally, containing a code and a link.
- Either type the code into the Sign-in code box and click Continue, or open the link in the email and click Continue on the Confirm your sign-in page.
The code and the link each work for one sign-in only. If the email does not arrive, or you typed the wrong address, click Use another email or request a new code to start again.
Once you are signed in you see Your shared work, or a list of your Organizations if you belong to any.
Staying signed in
Your sign-in works across all your tabs and renews itself while you use Rally. If you leave it alone for a long time you will be asked to sign in again. Sign out is on the first page and in the account menu, and signing out in one tab signs you out in every other tab too, which is what you want on a shared computer. Signing in, signing out and Lockdown mode has the details.
Finding your way around
If you have used the Mac app, the layout will look familiar: one sidebar with Space pills across the top and your Channels under them, the conversation with its title pill, and an account menu. The difference is that you only see what has been shared with you.
- Space pills appear only when you can see a Space other than General. Click one to show only its Channels, or All for everything. A guest with one shared conversation sees little more than that conversation, which is the point.
- Channels shared with you that are not in a Space you can see are grouped under a Shared channels pill.
- Open space in a Channel's title pill menu shows Channels in this Space, a read-only overview.
- Breakouts open beside their Channel, as on the Mac. See Breakouts.
- The account menu has Switch organization and Sign out.
- A Download the Mac app button sits above the account menu. The Mac app is for Macs with Apple silicon.
- You can rename a Channel or Breakout, and archive a Breakout, from its title pill menu. An archived Breakout shows Restore breakout. An archived Channel has to be restored before its conversations can reopen.
The browser version needs a reasonably wide window. If it is too narrow, Rally asks you to Make this window wider.
Drafts you are typing survive switching to another tab and back.
The conversation itself
The conversation works as it does on the Mac: live messages, attachments, pictures in the lightbox, artifacts, the people in the conversation, its resources, and the Sidekicks attached to it. Everything in Working in a Channel applies, with a few exceptions:
- Live sites do not preview inside the page. You see Preview unavailable here and a way to open the site in your browser instead.
- Open in a new window opens an ordinary browser tab or window, and artifacts open in a new tab.
- There is no built-in browser panel beside the conversation. Links open in new tabs.
- There are no buttons to save a reply as an image or PDF.
- Importing from Claude or ChatGPT is not available.
- Window positions are not remembered.
Sharing from the browser
To bring someone else into the conversation you are in, click its name in the title pill and choose Share. Type one or more email addresses, separated by spaces, commas or semicolons, and send. Each person gets an invitation like the one you received.
- The dialog only takes email addresses. There is no choice of access level and no list of who has already been invited.
- Sharing Main shares only Main, not the Breakouts. Sharing one Breakout does not reveal Main or the other Breakouts.
- Whether you may share at all depends on your role in the Organization; see Who can see what.
