Chapter 1 · Getting started / 1.1
Install Rally and sign in
Download Rally for your Mac, open it, and sign in with Google.
Everything starts on your Mac. This page gets Rally onto it, through its short introduction, and signed in with your Google account.
What you need
- A Mac with Apple silicon (an M-series chip). Rally is built only for these Macs. There is no Windows, Linux or Intel Mac version.
- A Google account. It is the only way to sign in to the Mac app, and the same account becomes your identity in Rally.
You do not need an invitation to download the app. Downloading it does not put you into anybody's Organization either; that happens on the next page.
Download Rally
- Go to rallywith.ai and click Download for Mac at the top of the page. The big button below the headline (Download the macOS beta) and the Start free trial buttons under the pricing plans fetch the same file.
- Open the downloaded Rally.dmg.
- Drag Rally into your Applications folder.
- Open Rally from Applications or Launchpad.
The installer is signed and checked by Apple, so your Mac should open it without complaint.
If someone sent you a download link
A teammate, or an invitation email, may give you a personal link that looks like rallywith.ai/download/#token=… instead. It opens a page headed Welcome to Rally with a Download for macOS button.
- Click Download for macOS, and keep the page open until the download starts.
- Opening the page does not use up the link. Only clicking the button does, so it is safe to preview it in your email.
- Some links work once. Others work as many times as you like until a date the sender chose.
- A link that came with an invitation stops working if that invitation is cancelled, declined or replaced by a newer one.
- If the download breaks halfway, start it again from the button. It cannot pick up where it left off.
If the page says This link is incomplete or invalid. Ask the sender for a new link., do exactly that. The same goes for a link that has been used up or has expired. If the page says it is busy or the installer is briefly unavailable, wait a moment and use its retry button. If nothing works, the public Download for Mac button on rallywith.ai gets you the same app.
The introduction
When you open Rally with a brand-new account, it plays a short animated introduction in three screens. Each one has a small demo you can poke at.
- Meet Rally. Work moves forward together. You, your team and Rally in one conversation. Click Meet streams to continue.
- A stream gives your work a home. Each piece of work gets its own conversation. Click Explore breakouts.
- Explore an idea in a breakout. Taking a side conversation off the main one. Try Start breakout in the demo, then click Get started.
Back goes back a screen. If you would rather skip it, the skip button on the first two screens reads Sign in before you have signed in, and Skip intro afterwards.
Note
The introduction still says stream, which is the old name for a Channel. Wherever it says stream, think Channel. The rest of this book uses the new word.
Once you finish or skip it, Rally remembers that on your account, so you will not see it again, even on another Mac. People whose accounts already existed when the introduction was added never see it. If your Mac has Reduce motion turned on in its accessibility settings, the animations show their final frame instead of moving.
Sign in with Google
Next comes the Welcome screen: Welcome to Rally, Your team, your work, and Rally. All in one place. and Sign in or create your account. There is one button, and it does both jobs.
- Click Continue with Google. Rally opens your usual web browser at Google's sign-in page.
- Choose your Google account and approve.
- The browser shows a page called Returning you to Rally and hands you back to the app on its own after a moment. If it does not, click Open Rally on that page. You can close the browser tab afterwards.
- Back in Rally, the button reads Completing sign in… while it finishes.
There is no separate sign-up. If this is your first time, signing in creates your Rally account.
Tip
If the browser says This sign-in response is incomplete or invalid, go back to Rally and click Continue with Google again. A fresh start fixes it almost every time.
Where your data lives
The Mac app does not ask where in the world to keep your data. Every Organization you create lives in Rally's single Global deployment. For the details of how your data is handled, see What Rally shares, and with whom.
Other ways in
The Mac app is the place to begin, and it is the one this chapter describes. Once you are set up, you can also follow your Channels from your iPhone, and people you share a conversation with can join it from a web browser.
Once you are signed in, create or join an Organization.
