Chapter 9 · Settings and shortcuts / 9.5
Keyboard shortcuts
Every key combination Rally knows, in one place.
This is the page to print and prop against your monitor. Rally has no screen that lists its shortcuts and no way to change them, so this is where they are all written down. They are grouped by where your cursor is when you press them, because the same keys can do different things in different places.
The symbols are the ones on a Mac keyboard: ⌘ is Command, ⌥ is Option, ⇧ is Shift and ⌃ is Control.
Anywhere in Rally
| Keys | What they do |
|---|---|
| ⌘ , | Open Settings. |
| ⌘ ⇧ F | Open Search organization, to find a message, link, artifact or file. See Search and links. |
| ⌘ W | Close the front window. |
| ⌘ Q | Quit Rally. (Closing the window does not; see Rally on your Mac.) |
| Esc | In the Settings and Sidekicks windows, close the window, as long as nothing else is open and you are not mid-way through typing. |
In the search pop-up
Once Search organization is open:
| Keys | What they do |
|---|---|
| ↑ ↓ | Move through the results. Going past the last one loads more. |
| Return | Open the highlighted result. |
| ⌘ 1 to ⌘ 9 | Open the first to ninth result directly. |
| ← → | With a filter tab selected, move to the next or previous filter. |
When the pop-up opens, your last search is already selected, so you can type straight over it.
Tip
The number shortcuts are not marked on the results, so few people find them. ⌘ ⇧ F, a few letters, ⌘ 1 is about the quickest way to anywhere in Rally.
In the message box
These work in the message box of any Channel or Breakout, and when you start a new one. The message box covers lists, mentions and slash commands in more detail.
| Keys | What they do |
|---|---|
| Return | Send the message (or create the Channel or Breakout, on the new one screen). |
| ⇧ Return | Start a new line without sending. |
| ⌘ ⇧ 8 | Turn the line, or the selected lines, into a bulleted list. |
| ⌘ ⇧ 7 | Turn them into a numbered list. |
| ⇧ Return, inside a list | Start the next item of the list. (Plain Return still sends.) |
| Tab, inside a list | Indent the item. |
| ⇧ Tab, inside a list | Move the item back out. |
| ⌘ Z | Undo. Straight after starting a new list item, it takes back only the new bullet. |
| Esc | Close the @-mention or slash-command list. |
| Return or Tab, in the slash-command list | Accept the first suggestion. |
The list keys are the same as in Slack and Google Docs, so if you already use them there, your hands are ahead of you. They follow the physical 7 and 8 keys, so they work on keyboards laid out for other languages too.
If you type in a language that uses an input method, such as Japanese or Chinese, Return finishes the word you are composing rather than sending the message half-written.
Adding people to a new Channel
On the new Channel screen, in the Add people box:
| Keys | What they do |
|---|---|
| ⌘ 1 to ⌘ 9 | Add the first to ninth suggested person. Each suggestion shows its key hint. |
| ↑ ↓ and Return | Move through the suggestions and add the highlighted one. |
| Backspace | In an empty box, remove the last person you added. |
| Esc | Close the list of suggestions. Press it again to close the new Channel. |
Answering Rally's questions
When Rally stops to ask you something with a card of options (see While Rally works):
| Keys | What they do |
|---|---|
| A, B, C… | Pick or unpick that option. |
| 1, 2, 3… | The same, by number instead of letter. |
| ⌘ Return | Submit your answer. The button shows this hint. |
The letter and number keys work only when you are not typing in a text box inside the card, so you can still write an "Other" answer containing the letter A.
In the built-in browser
When a web page is open in Rally's built-in browser (see Research and the built-in browser), the keys are the ones Safari and Chrome use. They work whether you last clicked Rally's browser controls or the page itself.
| Keys | What they do |
|---|---|
| ⌘ T | Open a new tab. |
| ⌘ W | Close the current tab. (Inside the browser this closes the tab, not the window.) |
| ⌘ L | Jump to the address bar. |
| ⌘ R | Reload the page. |
| ⌘ [ | Go back. |
| ⌘ ] | Go forward. |
| ⌃ Tab or ⌘ ⇧ ] | Next tab. |
| ⌃ ⇧ Tab or ⌘ ⇧ [ | Previous tab. |
| ⌘ 1 to ⌘ 8 | Go to that tab. |
| ⌘ 9 | Go to the last tab, however many there are. |
With a tab button selected, ← and → move between tabs, Home and End jump to the first and last, and Delete or Backspace closes that tab.
In the sidebar and panels
| Keys | What they do |
|---|---|
| ⌥ ↑ / ⌥ ↓ | Move a selected pinned Channel up or down. See Arranging your Channels. |
| ⌥ ← / ⌥ → | Move a selected Space pill left or right. |
| ← →, on a panel's edge | With the edge of the right-hand panel selected, ← makes the panel wider and → narrower. |
| Return, on a panel's edge | Put the right-hand panel back to its usual width. |
The arrows on their own only move the selection up and down the sidebar. Only pinned Channels can be reordered; the rest keep their own order.
In a title pill's menu
Once you have clicked a Channel's or Breakout's name to open its menu:
| Keys | What they do |
|---|---|
| ↑ ↓ | Move through the menu's items. |
| Tab | Move through everything in the menu, including its search box and Add buttons. |
| Esc or ← | In People, Sidekicks, Breakouts or More, go back to the top of the menu. At the top, Esc closes it. |
On computers other than a Mac
Rally is made for the Mac, and this page is written for it. If you meet Rally on another kind of computer, Ctrl takes the place of ⌘ for most of these shortcuts. One exception uses the Command key only and does nothing elsewhere: ⌘ 1 to 9 in Add people.
