Chapter 10 · Running an Organization / 10.4

Belonging to several Organizations

Switch between Organizations, create another one, and accept invitations from new ones.

Plenty of people belong to more than one team, such as their company and a client who also works in Rally. One Rally account can belong to several Organizations, and you move between them from the account menu without signing out.

As the chapter opening said, Organizations are separate worlds. Channels, Spaces, Sidekicks, connections and members never cross from one to another. Rally shows you one Organization at a time.

Note

Rally is turning on the Organization switcher gradually, so your account may not have it yet. If the account menu shows only Sidekicks, Settings and Log out, the switcher is not on for you. Everything else in Rally works the same, and you can still accept invitations when you sign in, as described in Create or join an Organization.

The account menu

Click your name or picture at the bottom-left of the window. When the switcher is on, the menu has an Organizations section listing each Organization you belong to.

  • A check mark sits beside the one you are in now.
  • A green dot beside another one means something has happened there. Hover over it for the details, such as how many mentions are waiting for you, or how many Channels are waiting for your input. Unread activity means there is something new to look at, but nothing is waiting on you.
  • If you belong to Organizations in different regions, each row also shows its region.

If Rally could not fetch the latest counts, the menu says Counts last updated and how long ago, so you know the dots may be out of date.

There is deliberately no combined inbox across Organizations. Each one keeps its own activity, and the dots are there to tell you when it is worth hopping over.

Switch to another Organization

Click its name in the Organizations section. A small spinner appears on the row while Rally gets it ready, then Rally reopens in that Organization, with its own Spaces, Channels and settings.

Now and then Rally asks you to confirm who you are before it opens another Organization, usually because you have not been there for a while. The row then says Finish signing in to Rally in your browser, and your browser opens. Sign in there and Rally carries on. If you closed the browser tab by mistake, click the row again to reopen it.

If switching does not work, the row tells you why:

  • Connect to open this organization. You are offline. Rally needs a connection to open a different Organization.
  • You are no longer a member of this organization. Your access has ended, and the list refreshes to drop it. See Leaving, removing and closing.
  • Rally could not open this organization. Something else went wrong. Try again in a moment, and if it keeps happening, see Contacting support.

Accept an invitation from a new Organization

When someone in another Organization invites you, the invitation appears in the same menu, under Invitations, as Join and the Organization's name, with Invited by and the person's name underneath. Rally may also pop up the invitation by itself.

Click it to open a dialog, then choose Join, Not now or Decline. The full details, including the email you receive, are in Create or join an Organization.

After you join, the new Organization appears in the Organizations list, ready to switch to.

Create another Organization

On the Mac, the account menu does not currently offer a way to create a second Organization. On your iPhone, the Organizations screen has a Create an organization section, as described in Rally on your iPhone. An Organization created there belongs to your account, so it appears in the Mac's account menu too when the switcher is on.

Whoever creates an Organization becomes its owner, with everything that comes with that (see Roles). It starts with nobody in it but you, so the next stop is Inviting people. An Organization of one is tidy, but the meetings are a bit quiet.
